The AU’s two-day-long 20th summit opened today and Iran has officially been invited to take part in the high-profile meeting.

The Iranian foreign minister, heading a high-ranking delegation, is slated to follow up Iran’s mutual cooperation with the African Union, meet with participating African presidents and foreign ministers, and attend a press conference during his stay in Addis Ababa.

The African Union, as the continent’s most important body, holds two summits every year.

Tehran has prioritized promotion of its economic and political ties with the African states and the country is now considered as one of the African Union’s strategic partners.

Tehran’s efforts to boost ties and cooperation with Africa have led to its acceptance as an observing member of the AU, where it has shown an active presence in the AU summit meetings.
